Prompt: #11: Ring

Summary: It was as though he'd never given a damn. For her, for anything.

Amy twisted a bit in the ropes, mind racing as she tried to loosen the knots. Neither effort seemed to be getting her anywhere.

Focus on Rory...

Focus on him? How could she not focus on him? There he was, looming over her and the Doctor, like a vulture. He stared down on them, his normally loving eyes cool, arms folded across his chest impassively, the left one facing outward.

It was as though he'd never given a damn. For her, for anything.

Make Rory remember...

Right. Easier said than done. It'd be simpler to knock down a solid brick wall armed with nothing but a toothpick.

Feeling halfway to despair, Amy sagged in place, staring at the man she loved. A glint caught her eye, and she found her gaze pulled to his wedding band.

For better or for worse...

Ever so briefly, she envied couples with normal married lives. Lives where the "worse" didn't entail dire peril or uncertain fates. But, then, every fate was uncertain, in the long run. Wasn't marriage just taking on such a fate hand-in-hand with someone you trusted to hold on just as tightly as you did?

Time to find out what fate had in store.

"Rory," Amy whispered, "what's the Ganger going to do to us?"

"Whatever he wants," he muttered in reply.

"What do you want to do to us?"

"Whatever he wants."

"No--that's no answer," she protested. "I want to know what you want, Rory. Because it can't be what the Ganger wants. Whatever he's done to you, you're still your own person, with a mind of your own. With a heart of your own. Look me in the eyes," she demanded, "and tell me what you want."

Rory seemed to falter. "What...I want...?"

Sensing that she was on the right track, Amy plunged in. "Do you know what I want, Rory?" There was an almost imperceptible head-shake, proving that he was listening to her. "I want my husband back. I want the man I married to come back to me. I want my stupid, beautiful, brave Rory. I want the man who waited two thousand years for me. The man who grew up listening to my stories of an imaginary man in a box, when everybody else thought I was mad. The man who loves me too much to stoop to being someone else's puppet!"

She took a breath, feeling tears stinging at her eyes. Was she making progress? It was impossible to say. Rory looked...mildly confused, but otherwise inscrutable.

"That's good, Amy," she heard the Doctor whispering behind her. "That's very good. That's what he needs to hear. Keep going. You'll get him back."

But what if she didn't?

Amy closed her eyes, and took a few more breaths to steady herself. Gulping back emotion, she looked up at Rory. "Now, I'm going to ask you this again, and you'd damn well better answer me this time. What do you want, Rory Williams? Do you want to stand idly by and let the Ganger do whatever he likes, to someone who loves you as much as I do? Or do you want to be you again? Tell me what it is that you want."

Rory stepped closer. "I want," he murmured, crouching before her. "I...want..."

His hand smoothed over Amy's hair, stroked at her cheek. Brushed away a tear that had started to fall. Leaning in, he pressed his forehead to hers.

"I want you," he whispered, kissing her tenderly.
