Mice and Considering Community

There is not enough paper in the world, not enough pixels in the Intarwebz to give me the room to talk about how much I loathe discovering mice in the larder.

Again.

After cleaning and supposedly - supposedly - mouse-proofing one of our two larders.

Again.

So we'll go out and get more coarse steel wool, and we'll drag everything out of the other larder - again - and I swear to every god there is, that I will stuff steel wool into every hole I possibly can, even the ones BB was so sure were too small even for mice to come through. BZZZZT wrong answer. They can.

*Heavy sigh, goes looking for the soju*

Of course I’m late to the news that the mod of Unconventional Courtship has stepped down from the comm and as of now the fest isn’t running this year. Of course.

I had ideas for UC but then again I can use one idea to create a rewrite and the other for Iddy Iddy Bang Bang if that runs this year.

More Firefly?!??!!!?

As a coincidental follow-up to my post about a new Stargate show being in the works, here I am posting about something new from the Firefly universe!

Apparently, Nathan Fillion has been releasing every few days short videos of him approaching various actors from the show and saying, "It's happening!" That's it. So far, the videos have shown Sean Maher, Gina Torres, Morena Baccarin, and Summer Glau.

The internet is going wild with speculation. It's not expected that they're starting a new live-action series, since Nathan Fillion already has a current series running (The Rookie). Also, people don't think that an extension of the series would work well with the actors being so much older, not because of looks but because of story reasons, such as why this particular group of people, in a not-exactly-peaceful system with dozens of worlds to settle on, would still all be alive and traveling together twenty-five years later.

On the other hand, the videos haven't included Alan Tudyk yet, so maybe this will be a continuation of the 'Verse after the events of Serenity! (Yeah, yeah, I know, too soon.)

Top suggestions on what this might be is an animated series with the original voices, and a series of Big Finish audios, and yes, Big Finish was specifically named, which warms this audio fan's heart.

But at this point, it's wait and see. I am not sure I'm as excited this time as I was for the Stargate news, because Firefly was so incredibly good and I feel like any addition to the 'Verse could not possibly live up to the original. But I'm still happy to see that something is happening after all these years.

I might start crossposting fics on my blog again. I do have some things I’ve written and downloaded from AO3 that I can look at but I have to wait and add the other fics.

Looking into Squidgeworld but tbh I feel if everyone that went to AO3 posted there it would suffer the same issues as AO3.

Despite having a bunch of things I've wanted to talk about, I haven't posted in a while. Various reasons for that, but mostly it's me not setting aside time to do so. So, here I am, forcing myself to finally write something.

Where is the time going? )

More serious stuff )

Sojourns into AI )

Music )

Gallifrey One )

And that's about it. We're still cleaning out the house and garage, and have two dump loads, a Goodwill run, and a tech-recycling run scheduled for the next two weeks. We're also starting to plan what we're going to replace the back deck with (possibly a sun room!), but that might get pushed back because the heating broke today. Luckily, it's not too cold anymore, so we can weather it for a little while, but we're not happy about having to spend on that right now.

I shall now wander off in my warm fuzzy socks.

[I wrote this with about 0 brain something like 2 months ago. But I was feeling like posting one of my drafts and I just realised belatedly that Chris Bidmead had died in August. Or possibly just found out and was shocked for a second time, who knows, it's terrible how much I forget. But I do love his DW era very much and while he lived to a good age, I am still sorry to hear it - he brought so much to the show & was a rare DW script editor who was genuinely interested in SFF* as a genre, which showed in a whole bunch of scripts commissioned by him, which are like any of the other eras - even if a whole set of them then had the misfortunate to be made by the next script editor who Did Not Get Them at all. This serial is actually one he wrote later for his successor's rather more action/dark orientated era (and said successor, Eric Saward, Did Not Get this one either), but - I had prepared it earlier! And also: I love Frontios!]

I haven't much brain so I thought for this edition of the Unofficial Fandom 50 I would once again burble about a favourite classic Who serial, this time...

Frontios

tumblr gifset for pictures

What is it?

It is a four part Fifth Doctor serial (4x 25 mins; c. 1hr 25 minutes in total) from Season 21 (1984). Yes, it has Giant Woodlice.

The Fifth Doctor (Peter Davison), Tegan (Janet Fielding) and Turlough (Mark Strickson) accidentally stray into the far future - so far that the Time Lords are forbidden to go there. They arrive at a tiny, struggling colony of survivors from Earth, who are under bombardment from an unknown enemy from space - except there's also something beneath them: the earth on Frontios is hungry...

Sometimes, as a DW fan, you love the unloved serial; sometimes you adore the fan favourite - and sometimes you just love a decent one more than you can properly justify or exactly explain, but we've all been there. I have a few of these, and Frontios is one, although honestly I think it belongs in the circle just outside of the all time greats personally, which is why I'm going to babble about it. (I mean, I realise, like everything, it does depend on a) taste and b) how people feel about lumbering giant woodlice).

(It's also the only DW serial where a member of the main guest cast had to be replaced at the last minute because the original actor, Peter Arne, had been murdered. This has no bearing on anything, other than the replacement being the excellent William Lucas, but I felt the need to mention it anyway). (All my DW classic faves do not involve someone dying or nearly dying irl, I promise).

What do I love about it?

It's about confronting buried/unspoken terrors & what you can do with gravity in SFF if you have some giant woodlice to hand, plus it's one of those forsaken, almost Shakespearean colonies classic Who loves to do (the youthful leader with his fragile hold on it is even called Plantagenet) and I am a sucker for such things. The guest cast is great - William Lucas, Lesley Dunlop, Peter Gilmore & Jeff Rawle, pre-Drop the Dead Donkey.

Penned by Five's original script editor, Chris Bidmead, Peter Davison shines here, and gets to pull out his brainy specs for the first time since Bidmead left; Tegan and Turlough are both really well used, with Turlough's buried race trauma demonstrating that having alien companions as well as earthlings on the TARDIS can lead to interesting options for storytelling.

It's dark and weird, fascinating and quotable, with excellent team!TARDIS banter. The hatstand gets a moment of glory. The TARDIS is disintegrated. The Doctor saves Tegan's life by being really insulting to her. "Frontios buries its own dead."

Basically, I love weird colonies, I love strange ideas, I love this TARDIS team, I love the hatstand, I'm not at all put off by giant woodlice and: "Just tell them I came and went like a summer cloud." (Oh, Five. <3)

* Classic Who script editors (and producers) were assigned to the show by the BBC and did not always have a huge amount of choice about being offered the post and then being removed from it - it was just how the BBC worked at the time.

Dysfunctional Families Close Ranks

Whatever the horrors that Iran's theocracy has visited upon its own people - and they are horrors, as the grieving survivors of at least 7,000 Iranians killed by the regime in the past few months can attest, and the relatives of untold thousands killed in the years since 1979 - people in Iran will put that aside and stand against what we've done to them in the past 36 or so hours.

Your family may break your bones, bruise your mind, or force you down into heartbreak. You may hate your mother or your brother for what they've done to you. You may dream of revenge.

But when the neighborhood bully comes and strikes them down, injured or dead, then turns to you with a smile and says, "You're welcome," and expects you to go to your knees and thank him for that violence? You may well jump on the bastard's back and close your fingers around his neck, or hook them into his eyes, because they were your weight to bear, your sorrow to work through.

Didn't we learn this when we "freed" Iraq?

Apparently not.

So ... It's Another KPop First

At least for me; I'm joining 19 other KPop fans, all of them BTS ARMYs, for the BTS concert in Chicago in August. For about the same amount of money that I paid for the Lolla ticket I had to see Stray Kids. I'm buying into a box with AC, a private bathroom and apparently all the popcorn one could possibly want.

And why did I do this? Why did I pay very good money to watch a group I'm truly not interested in beyond a curiosity about the first KPop group to break into the Western World, and upset the KPop apple cart whilst doing so?

I think I just answered my own question with the last sentence.

I have KPop friends who are ARMY (the name for BTS fandom) first, last, and always. The crew I tend to hang with in Discord often has multiple groups they like, but many of them got into KPop because of BTS. The music reactor who led me to the crew on Discord got into KPop via BTS. And there is a veritable army of ARMY across the world who love the group.

I've had more than one invitation to watch the group perform. Until now, I hadn't the slightest intention of doing so (beyond the concert films I went to see with some of my friendly ARMY acquaintances.)

Somehow, this time I knew this was a chance. I need to talk to these people about what lured them into being BTS fans. And I need to listen to some of their music - I have until August to get a little more acquainted with the music. (I do like the solo music from two group members, RM and Suga. If I like their music, perhaps I can listen to group songs and figure out a little bit of what makes them ... great? Yes, probably great.

That doesn't mean I'll come out of this expensive experiment as a dedicated member of ARMY. It does mean that I really want to understand the BTS deal, and approach that with people I'm already at least a bit friendly with. I mean, they invited me, which to me says that they're the positive type of ARMY, not the toxic ones that are apparently out there.

So at the age of 70 - hell, I'll be almost 71 when the concert happens - I'm checking out something new. At least for me.

I don't want to say pray for me, because I doubt it'll be a terrible experience. I do want to say cross your fingers for me.

"A Night at the Lanes"

Title: "A Night at the Lanes"
Fandom(s): Doctor Who
Characters: Tenth Doctor, Donna Noble, Clara Oswald, original character
Rating: G
Genre: General
Word Count: 6632

Summary: (Blue Rain AU) In repayment of a favor from his colleague Dave, Jon takes Donna, Dave, and Dave's girlfriend Clara out for a night of bowling.

Read it on AO3.

Author's Notes: Nothing special here. This is mostly intended to introduce new characters for the future: Dave, Jon's colleague who's a mechanic in his group and who'd been mentioned in Blue Rain but never actually appeared, and Dave's girlfriend Clara.

I did notice that while selecting character tags on AO3, "Clara Oswald" is subsumed by "Clara Oswin Oswald", which is weird to me, that the splinter's tag is considered dominant, not the companion's tag. Personally, I'd have three separate tags for Clara Oswald, Oswin Oswald, and Clara Oswin Oswald, since they're all different characters, but if I couldn't, I'd definitely make "Clara Oswald" the dominant tag.

Job One: Remember that Computers Are Stupid

Job Two: bake Bob's favorite cookies to thank him for setting up my new laptop, and putting up with the occasional stupidity that's part of dealing with ones and zeroes.

We both knew it would take a couple of days, or even more than that, and I'm trying to be patient as he preps the new one (an Asus Vivo) so that we can download all my files from my slowly dying Lenovo, files that have been downloaded onto a delightful little red portable 2T hard drive.

That drive may will come in handy after the transfer, since I might need to keep it connected to my new laptop for a few weeks, or maybe months. My Lenovo has 1.82 T of storage, whilst my Asus only has 1T. We'll eventually see about getting a new, larger, drive in the Asus, but I don't foresee me using up the 1T of storage the Asus has.

I've named the little hard drive Ada, and my new laptop is officially Alice-Alyx. It's the first time I've named a laptop, but it seemed the right thing to do with this one. I'm laughing a bit at myself, but hell, why not name some things that will help keep me happy for a good long time?

Now one of the remaining questions is whether Alice-Alyx will recognize my Samsung Galaxy ear buds. We tried to get them paired up yesterday, and the Asus laughed at us. Once again, I'm reminded that computers are stupid; they only do what we tell their ones and zeroes to do.

In the non-computer part of the weekend, I was able to get in touch with a skiffy fannish acquaintance whose holiday card came back to me a bit ago. It turns out that he and his partner had indeed moved from the address I had for him, so I can send him something soon, and most definitely this coming holiday season.

I also cleaned the bathroom, and sorted a small mountain of paperwork that had grown so high it was in danger of toppling over. I'm terrible at organizing and sorting, but I managed to do it today. I'm inordinately proud of myself. (I probably shouldn't be quite so loudly proud, because the universe will undoubtedly send something my way to punish me for such hubris. Heh.)

So that's my excitement for the weekend, and I am very happy that that's the most excitement I've had to deal with. Compared to this time last week, it's easy-peasy.

Having a panic attack while your friend is also having a very shitty time and having to help (while trying to not seem like you yourself are having a bad time) is sure an experience. Been trying to get over it with movies.

Zootopia's message is still a little muddy, but "Didney" would never do something like this now (Zootopia 2 not withstanding, no idea how good that one is). Goldeneye made me feel like a kid again. I always forget I enjoy James Bond movies. The difference is I'm an adult now, and can think of them critically.

As for new watches... 8½ is... overrated? I guess? It feels like a dream, it plays with its medium so darn well, but alas, I cared not for our director character. Maybe on a rewatch it's better, but I have no desire to do so. Sleeping Car though? Very very silly. Always nice seeing Madeleine Carroll in a not-drama. I have seen four talkies with Ivor Novello and in half of them he's the most obnoxious rascal (good, he plays them well). Lots of moving camera, not enough trains. I still enjoyed I Lived With You more, but somehow believed Carroll and Novello's romance more than Jeans and Novello.

(And I would believe his romance with me even more *cough*)

I have to thirst somewhere. My friends can't handle it, and it's not even as scandalous as Cairns's for Veidt's tight clothing :P
