The Midnight Express is a route of mystery and adventure. Well, that’s what the brochure said anyway, and humans are always so fond of murder mysteries on trains. There’s something terribly romantic about a long train ride through the countryside at night. Nothing but the sound of wheels on the tracks, pounding faster and faster as the train speed through the light drizzle. Rain drops slowly spotting the windows were hardly noticed by most passengers. The train horn echoing around the hills; blowing long and loud into the acoustic darkness.
The Doctor was worried. Of course he was. The last time he boarded something of a similar name, it didn’t end well. That mystery wasn’t one he wanted to relive. It certainly wasn’t romantic. Amy and Rory were excited though. Well, Amy mostly. Rory was. . . Looking like Rory always did whenever Amy got ridiculously excited like this, and he wasn’t too happy, but went along anyway because it made Amy happy. The Doctor studied him. He needed an excuse to leave the two of them alone on this trip. “Midnight” just had too many negatives in his mind. . . Donna.
He wondered if he’d ran out of wedding presents. How many presents does one give on that occasion?
He looked up for his middle distance stating and realised all too suddenly his two companions were waiting on an answer. He hummed, and then added something about the TARDIS and needing to go to her. He added that they such have some “wedding shenanigans”. Yes, that sounds human, he thought. He left, but he knew he’d spend the next few hours wondering and worrying about his two companions and their trip.
He decided not to wait. He raced to their terminus and of course, the whole trip had gone without a hitch. Amy was still oozing excitement, clearly wedding shenanigans had happened. The Doctor smiled weakly. He still didn’t trust the name. The memories still felt too raw even though it was, for him, a whole lifetime ago. Still, he wasn’t going to hear the last of this for a while yet. Well, into he dished up another wedding gift. Rory already looked worried, and neither of them had mentioned anything yet.
The train horn interrupted all their thoughts, and forced them into motion. Back to the TARDIS they went, Amy leaps ahead. The Doctor hung back, allowing himself a little trip into his memory. He wiped a tear he didn’t feel fall but was sure was there. It was, after all, just a namesake. What’s in a name?
